World Refugee Day 2010
ISED Solutions celebrates World Refugee Day 2010 by remembering and honoring the millions of refugees who have been repatriated, reintegrated, and resettled around the world, and an additional 43 million people who remain uprooted today. The end of 2009 marked a high of 15.2 million refugees around the world; this number does not include the nearly one million asylum seekers and over 27 million internally displaced people (IDPs) also in need of aid and respectful consideration. Refugees resettling around the world are extremely diverse, coming from Iraq, Bhutan, Pakistan, Burma, and Sudan, to name just a few countries of origin. We are humbled, yet inspired by the tragedies faced and obstacles overcome by these individuals.
June 20th, 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of the U.S. Refugee Act of 1980, the pivotal legislation that marked the beginning of an organized system of resettlement designed to help refugees become socially and economically self-sufficient. Since this important step in our nation’s history, the United States of America has resettled more than 2.5 million refugees in our communities and neighborhoods.
ISED celebrates this monumental day by maintaining our commitment to strengthening refugees’ resettlement and community development efforts in the United States and around the world. As we move forward in our 23rd year, ISED continues to provide assistance to these growing communities by strengthening refugee service agencies through tried and true methods of organizational evaluation, development, and technical assistance. We beseech you to honor this day by honoring the strength and perseverance of this growing, vulnerable population, and by remembering those who remain uprooted and without aid around the world today. For these individuals, ISED hopes to help create a sustainable and promising future.
